I agree. I think the community is overreacting to this. It’s the Radar. It’s only a part of the above the fold dashboard experience, unless they change the dashboard experience and place the Radar as a fixed component sperate from the rest of the infinite scroll.

Tumblr is FREE, and will remain free for at least the near term. The ads are also confined to the dashboard experience, not the external blog/site experience, which is smart. This does not force a diminished experience on the external sites due to poorly targeted ads or incongruent ad/content experiences.

On the flip side though, just think of how HUGE Tumblr would be as an ad network if it did open dedicated advertising space on all it’s external facing user sites? Total dick move, but it would be a monster ad network overnight.
